Lowering Your Caravan Insurance Premium
Your caravan insurance premium is based upon a number of factors which insurance underwriters believe will make the risk of loss or damage to your caravan more or less likely. If you can do something to reduce those risks then you may be able to significantly reduce the cost of your caravan insurance
In some instances insurers may see these things differently. Some may make the fitting of security devices mandatory, e.g. a wheel clamp and hitch lock, whereas others may offer discounts off your premium if you comply
Generally though, by following some of the following guidelines you should be able to save yourself money on your caravan insurance not to mention reducing the chance of your caravan being stolen or damaged
Always use a hitch lock and wheel clamp as your first line of defence. They are very visible and will deter the opportunist thief. You can also add a caravan alarm or a tracking device to your caravan. Tracking devices will tend to give the biggest premium discount as the chance of recovering your caravan if it was stolen is much greater
If you are unable to keep your caravan at home, try to find an approved caravan storage facility such as those that have Cassoa accreditation. Some caravan insurers will insure caravans on caravan parks with seasonal pitches. If your caravan is kept on a seasonal pitch check out whom these insurers are. And make sure that the on-site security is good and that there have been no recent caravan thefts or incidents of malicious damage at your chosen park
Try not to leave your touring caravan on the public highway. When it is at home make sure that it is either on your drive or in your garden. Caravans kept on the road in front of your house are at much more risk of damage from passing traffic or theft. Many insurers may exclude theft cover all together if your caravan is left on the road
Reducing the amount of annual mileage you plan to do with your touring caravan may also reduce your premium. Not all insurers offer this type of discount but the number of insurers who do is on the increase
If you are thinking about joining one of the caravanning clubs membership may again help reduce your insurance premium. Most caravan insurance providers will offer some form of membership discount
